Matías Larramendi-Salvat is a Ph.D. candidate in Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan. His research examines contemporary literature and film from the Southern Cone, Cuba, and Brazil, focusing on how the Neo-Baroque functions as a literary and material practice to confront authoritarianism, economic collapse, and ecological crisis without relying on traditional revolutionary frameworks. His first book project, Vida Neo-barroca: Crisis y literatura contemporánea en América Latina, traces how this aesthetic develops new modes of cultural intervention amid shifting social conditions. His work has appeared or is forthcoming in Revista de Estudios Hispánicos, Chasqui, Mediations, Décalages, and Universum.
He has taught courses on Latin American literature, film, and culture, as well as multiple levels of Spanish language. Alongside his academic work, he writes fiction that blends satire and formal experimentation, including the novel Historia Oficial del Carnaval Intergaláctico (Ediciones Tajante, 2025).
